The truth is that a search engine can use any of these Meta tags, but they don’t.  There’s even some debate today how much emphasis Google even places on the description Meta tag.  In light of many copyright infringements continuing on the Internet, there has been some discussion of using the “rel=author” tag.  If you’ve noticed photographs of people along with the search results in recent months, those photos are most likely a result of this particular tag.
