What’s the difference between a Mobile App and a Mobile Website?

Mobile website apps In the earliest days of smart phones 4G connectivity was an idea for the future, mobile phone and mobile internet connectivity was like the old dial up internet we all remember, you know, hurry up and wait. There weren’t standardized browsers in use across the different makes of mobile phones. At that time the best solution for a service provider to deliver content was to create an APP (short for application, a software program) that would function only on a specific mobile phones operating system, for example the Iphone 4. These Apps needed to be downloaded and installed on every mobile phone to function on each. Mobile Apps allowed a onetime delay that the cell phone user had to suffer through while the download finished and installed. Most apps still require internet connectivity to function because they need live data.

Even with the 4G connectivity available today Mobile Apps still hold a strong place on the mobile internet. Sophisticated (read complex) functions like navigation as an example, would not be practical to download completely each and every time you wanted directions.

Most businesses desktop websites do not have complex functions. Many have contact forms. Some have calculators. Still others have ecommerce capability to make purchases possible via their websites. All of these functions can be handled by mobile websites which can be downloaded page by page as desired by visitors and delivered automatically in their mobile format, whether the visitor arrives directly to the website, via a link from another website or referred by a search engine like Bing or Google.

So which suits your needs better, Mobile App or Mobile Website? It depends on what functions you need to deliver to your visitors.
